TasVOCAL launched

Background

The Tasmanian Commission of Inquiry found that the whole community needs to be able to respond to child abuse to protect the safety of children with improved education and better response mechanisms.

Government agencies and institutions will work together to respond to issues in trauma informed ways that are transparent and consistent with best practice and with national responses.

What is TasVOCAL?

TasVOCAL stands for Tasmanian Victim-Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse Legal.

TasVOCAL provides free legal advice for survivors of institutional child sexual abuse in Tasmania to access the National Redress Scheme, compensation and other support services.

TasVOCAL lawyers seek justice for victim-survivors through:

  • Supporting access to the National Redress Scheme and specialised counselling
  • Referrals for compensation, information and investigation
  • Seeking access to records and documents from institutions
  • Advice about the payments available through Victims of Crime and other schemes
  • Responding to other legal needs
  • Providing information to the community about how to report conduct and respond to concerns in a child-centred and trauma-informed way.

TasVOCAL lawyers do not:

  • Represent victim-survivors in civil or criminal claims, but we can make referrals for representation.
